Jan 28,  · "A Man Lay Dead," although published in , holds up well as an intriguing classic mystery. Like some others of its kind, the novel might have been batter read than heard. That is not to say it was not well performed,(It was.) but that there are so many characters, one practically needs a score card to keep them straight.4/4(2). As a "completionist" who collects every music album and book by authors of interest; it is a pleasure to like them when I gradually try them out. I was not enthralled by "A Man Lay Dead", from infamous New Zealander Ngaio Marsh. However, other than the crass titular man; nothing put me off reading more of them/5(11).

It is not until a real body turns up actually dead that we meet Inspector Alleyn for the first time. Unusually for the series, the book is told entirely from the perspective of Nigel Bathgate, who will become a recurring character and occasional Dr. Watson to Alleyn's Sherlock Holmes. And speaking of Holmes: Inspector Alleyn is a fan. Get this from a library! A man lay dead. [Ngaio Marsh] -- To amuse his house guests Sir Hubert Handsley devises a new form of the murder game. But when the lights go up there is a real corpse, with a real dagger in its back - and seven suspects have had.

A Man Lay Dead is the first in Ngaio Marsh’s Roderick Alleyn series and is a classic example of the English Country House murder mystery. The narrative is mostly from Nigel Bathgate’s point of view and since he is one of the guests, the mystery is reduced to only but a handful of not particularly interesting characters – and amongst those. Apr 30,  · A Man Lay Dead (Book): Marsh, Ngaio: Ngaio Marsh was one of the queens (she has been called the empress) of England’s Golden Age of mystery fiction. And in true Golden Age fashion, her oeuvre opens with, yes, a country-house party between the two world wars – servants bustling, gin flowing, the gentlemen in dinner jackets, the ladies all slink and smolder.
